Dow Reichhold and Sustainable Solutions Inc. Sign New Agreement

Endeavors help customers gain new value from reclaimed product waste streams

Research Triangle Park, N.C., and Wagoner, Okla. – August 7th, 2007 –Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex and Sustainable Solutions, Inc. (SSI) have signed an agreement through which the companies will pool product development and marketing resources to serve new and existing applications using regenerated leather and other post-industrial waste.

Through the SmartStreams™ process developed by SSI, manufacturing waste such as leather scrap is processed and used in high-value applications such as automotive seating, furniture upholstery and many others. Dow Reichhold enhances the SmartStreams process through both advanced latex binder chemistry and access to experienced new product development resources.

“Working with Dow Reichhold, we are creating opportunities for the reclamation and use of post-industrial waste in value-added applications,” K. Joy Nunn, president and founder of SSI, said. “By combining the technology and marketing savvy of both companies, we offer customers new value streams that improve not only profitability, but also their environmental stewardship efforts, which have a positive impact on the world we live in.”

Branded products currently produced through the agreement include:

  • Thermold™, a unique, nonwoven material with thermo-molding properties that can be used as a replacement for traditional plastics.
  • Dilusso™, a specialty composite rollgood made from regenerated leather and sustainable materials that offer a look and feel matching natural leather products.
  • UrbanWood™, an alternative for medium-density fiberboard (MDF), made from shipping pallets and other materials.

“SSI, with our support, is showing manufacturers that good environmental stewardship can be very profitable,” Galen Hatfield, vice president for development at Dow Reichhold, explained. “Together, we are developing products from post-industrial waste streams that are of the same – or better – quality as those produced via traditional processes. It is an exciting endeavor and we are happy to be working with an industry leader like SSI to bring these products to market.”
