Cheswold, Delaware – August 28, 2006 – Work is on-going at the Dow Reichhold facility in Cheswold, DE to bring the plant on-line, continue the investigation into the cause of the incident and initiate procedures for cleanup and removal of the railcar from the plant site. The railcar on the plant property was the source of a release of styrene vapor that began Friday evening, August 25, and was controlled by Saturday evening, August 26, 2006.
“We have made excellent progress on all fronts,” said Michael Galbus, plant manager for Dow Reichhold. “Employees are working through the process to bring the plant on-line enabling us to resume production, and that work will continue over the next several days. This release occurred from the railcar that was sitting on one of our rail sidings. The railcar was not connected to any of the plant process equipment, and there was no damage to the plant itself. We expect start-up to go smoothly, and as of this morning we have resumed shipments from inventory to our customers,” Galbus continued.
At the same time, crews have begun the process of cleaning up the immediate area around the railcar in preparation for moving the railcar from the plant site. After inspection of the car as part of the ongoing investigation, a certified contractor will be called in to replace any damaged parts. Upon approval of the railcar by appropriate authorities, Dow Reichhold will work with the shipper to send the car to a location where it will be cleaned and repaired as needed.
The investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing. Officials from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) as well as Dow Reichhold personnel are working to identify exactly what happened with the railcar.
